CHAPTER 10

NEW NEIGHBORS

It was nighttime when the plane glided on the water toward the dock. In the darkness, Alana exited the seaplane, stepped onto the dock, and yawned. She was ready to go to bed, but there was one thing she wanted to do first. With the coconut in her hand, she took a late-night stroll to the shore. Alana pulled out a shovel, dug a hole in the sand, and placed the coconut deep within the beach surface. She wanted Happy and Carl to wake up and see a coconut tree sprouting from their beach. She considered it a peace offering. Alana covered the hole in the ground with sand, using her hands. When the hole was filled in and coconut was planted properly, she walked toward her home.

As she crawled into bed, she thought about the day she spent exploring the other deserted island, and about Lars. She had spent the entire day on the island, but she never saw his home. She wondered where he lived on the island. Alana needed to get sleep because she had to wake up early to sell all the goods she had gathered from the island. She hoped Tick and Tock would buy everything from her. She also thought about Feathers. He might want some of the fish, especially the koi fish. Alana fell asleep dreaming of a museum that displayed the koi fish she had caught.

The sun shone through her window, but that wasn’t what woke Alana. She had slept through many a sunrise. This morning she was jostled out of bed by a knock on the door. She rubbed her eyes, opened the door, and let out a gasp.

“A gasp! That wasn’t the type of reaction I was hoping for,” Lars said as he stood in her doorway.

“I am happy to see you,” she explained, “I was just surprised. I didn’t expect to see you on Furtopia so soon.”

“The way you spoke about the island, I couldn’t resist hopping on a seaplane and taking a look. The minute I arrived, I saw the luscious coconut tree and knew I was home.”

“Home?” Alana questioned.

“Yes,” said Lars. “I’m going to move to Furtopia. I can either live here with you or you can build me a house.”

Alana didn’t know how to process all this information, so she suggested they visit the store together. “I can ask Wayne, who is in charge of the island, about getting you a house.”

“Perhaps I am mistaken, but I thought you were the island manager,” Lars said as he stood in front of Alana’s house.

As he spoke those words, Happy, who was on her morning jog, stopped and said, “Be warned: Alana takes her job as manager quite seriously.”

“Isn’t that a good thing?” Lars asked.

“It depends. Sometimes you can be too focused. Alana doesn’t leave any time for fun activities. I’ve never even seen her do a bit of cardio,” Happy explained.

“Not everyone finds cardio fun,” Alana remarked, irritated.

Happy shook her head, and said, “Seriously? There are no words.
